HCRG Holiday Craft & Bake Sale

Monday, November 14th, 2011

The Hammer City Roller Girls are busy — knitting, beading, painting & pasting! During the James St N Art Crawl on December 9th, we’ll be rolling out a Holiday Craft & Bake Sale.

Derby girls are baking and crafting everything, and the proceeds are going to the St. Matthew’s House Adopt-a-Family program.

We’ll be setting up shop outside three locations along the Crawl route:
- This Ain’t Hollywood (345 James St. North)
- Hammer City Records (228 James St. North @ Rear)
- Outside the Lighthouse Fish Market (219 James St. North)

Come and load up on awesome gifts, hot chocolate and delicious baked treats — the perfect sugar rush before hitting the next gallery. We’ll have organic, vegan, raw, and gluten-free options for everyone.

Smackie O is feverishly knitting, Naughty Bee has a needle and thread in hand, and Hammerhead is already planning to make the world’s best vegan holiday cupcake.

We skate AND bake. We whip AND stitch. We give hits AND give back. Help us support families this holiday season. See you December 9th!

Midwest BrewHaHa Recap

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

What an amazing weekend! For many of the Hammer City Eh! Team it was their first tournament. While both games were tough battles, the girls came back from the Midwest BrewHaHa tournament in Milwaukee, WI as strong as ever.

They played two WFTDA sanctioned bouts – one against Cleveland’s Burning River Roller Girls Allstars (352 – 12) and the second against NEO Rock n Roller Girls from Akron, Ohio (124 – 48). Despite their two losses, the team really sweat their asses off. There’s no denying that they need to continue to work on strategy but, one thing is for certain, they never gave up.  They played each jam as if it could change the game and the fans (and other teams) saw it and loudly cheered on. Hammer City doesn’t give up without a fight!

The HCRG want to give special thanks to The Derby News Network for filming the games and posting them online so that fans, family and friends could watch them from home.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a derby weekend without a celebratory party on the last day. One of the sponsors, The Horny Goat, hosted the night at their brewery, which was a fantastic opportunity to do some team bonding and meet some of the other derby girls (and guys) off skates. Skaters zoëDisco and Lorazeslam were even lucky enough to share a drink and grab a snapshot with Windy City skater (and one of the real skaters in the movie ‘Whip It‘) Jackie Daniels!

By the end of the three days, everyone was tired and bruised (some more than others) but the team is totally geared up for their upcoming game against QCRG Lake Effect Furies on June 11. Be sure to get your tickets as the team is itching to break their streak with a major win! Doors open at 6:00 pm with the first game play set to get underway at 7:00pm sharp. The game will be played at Dave Andreychuk (Mountain) Arena, 25 Hester Street in Hamilton.

You can purchase your tickets online, or at  Compass (McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC, 1280 Main St W) and This Ain’t Hollywood (345 James St N, James @ Barton). Check out this blog post for more details.
