Midwest BrewHaHa Recap

Saturday, May 28th, 2011

What an amazing weekend! For many of the Hammer City Eh! Team it was their first tournament. While both games were tough battles, the girls came back from the Midwest BrewHaHa tournament in Milwaukee, WI as strong as ever.

They played two WFTDA sanctioned bouts – one against Cleveland’s Burning River Roller Girls Allstars (352 – 12) and the second against NEO Rock n Roller Girls from Akron, Ohio (124 – 48). Despite their two losses, the team really sweat their asses off. There’s no denying that they need to continue to work on strategy but, one thing is for certain, they never gave up.  They played each jam as if it could change the game and the fans (and other teams) saw it and loudly cheered on. Hammer City doesn’t give up without a fight!

The HCRG want to give special thanks to The Derby News Network for filming the games and posting them online so that fans, family and friends could watch them from home.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a derby weekend without a celebratory party on the last day. One of the sponsors, The Horny Goat, hosted the night at their brewery, which was a fantastic opportunity to do some team bonding and meet some of the other derby girls (and guys) off skates. Skaters zoëDisco and Lorazeslam were even lucky enough to share a drink and grab a snapshot with Windy City skater (and one of the real skaters in the movie ‘Whip It‘) Jackie Daniels!

By the end of the three days, everyone was tired and bruised (some more than others) but the team is totally geared up for their upcoming game against QCRG Lake Effect Furies on June 11. Be sure to get your tickets as the team is itching to break their streak with a major win! Doors open at 6:00 pm with the first game play set to get underway at 7:00pm sharp. The game will be played at Dave Andreychuk (Mountain) Arena, 25 Hester Street in Hamilton.

You can purchase your tickets online, or at  Compass (McMaster University Student Centre (MUSC, 1280 Main St W) and This Ain’t Hollywood (345 James St N, James @ Barton). Check out this blog post for more details.

June 11, 2011: HCRG vs QCRG

Hamilton, ON, Canada – The Hammer City Roller Girls (HCRG) are excited to hit the track for their home second game of the 2011 season. The Hammer City Eh! Team will line up against Buffalo’s Queen City Roller Girls (QCRG) on Saturday, June 11 at Dave Andreychuk (Mountain) Arena. Doors open at 6:00 pm with the first game play set to get underway at 7:00pm sharp.

In the season opener doubleheader on May 7, both teams in the newly re-aligned Hammer City Roller Girls fell to London’s Forest City Derby Girls, so with the sting of that loss and hot off the track from The Midwest Brew Ha Ha tournament in Milaukee, WI, The Eh! Team is gunning for a win.

Recently QCRG has made a name for Buffalo as the all stars, now the Lake Effect Furies had an 8-1 season in 2010, during which they became full-fledged members of WFTDA. The two leagues are long established flat-track roller derby rivals, having skated against each other every season since 2007. In previous meetings on the track, the HCRG has come out on top 2 out of 3 times, so this is stacking up to be an exciting rematch!
